1849 testimonial

I have great pleasure in endorsing
the high opinion I have always entertained of the
exemplary character uniformly borne of Sargent
Major James Sperryn of the 68th Nat Inf since he
finished the Big insurrection in 1844- exhibiting as it was
those qualifications in a Non Commissioned Officer
that personally qualifies him for the responsible and
important position he has xxxxx, and stamping him
as deserving the support and rxxard hxxxout to
those who exhibit qualities that rxxxxr those? the
  sxxxing of advancement.
          Sargent Major Sperryn was
engaged in the battle of "Sobraon" and distinguished him
self by his gallant intrepidity in being among the hxxxrs
and charging the Men forward at the critical moment
of xxtxing the Enemy's Works - on that occasion his cool
demeanour was the remark and admiration of all
who witnessed his conduct and can bear testimony to his
conspicuous galantry on that eventful day.
